Hi,

My apologies for writing in English. I want to resurface my bathroom walls by sticking new tiles on top of existing ones. I'm even looking into waterproof wallpapers as an alternative option. I'm trying to avoid a "real" bathroom renovation and that I can reuse the insulation that is already there. I want to do it myself and I'm not certified at any type of renovation. Is this allowed? Are there any regulations I need to follow?

My second questions is about moving the washing basin. I want to change the tail end of the pipes to make them longer. The pipes run external on the wall and are composed of interconnected pieces that are fastened together with nuts. I want to replace the last piece which connects to the washing basin so I can relocate it. Is this something that an ordinary person with no certification is allowed to do? are there any regulations to follow?

Thanks for you time.

Not being an expert in this, I will simply start with asking if this is an apartment or house that you own. If it is an apartment, in a bostadsrättsförening, you will have to check with the board first. In a house that you own, you can do much more yourself, including not following best building practices, but in case of damage the insurance company will likely not pay anything if the issue resulted from not following best practice.

Considering you wont be making any changes to the water proofing, which is underneath the existing tiles, you can put new tiles on top of the old ones. Its not the best of practices, but it can be done. You just need to be clear about it when you sell the apartment or house later on. Its not a good idea if the existing bathroom is already old though.

As for your second question, the water pipes are most likekely connected together with compression fittings, its fairly easy to do yourself and you dont need a certificate to do it, as long as its done correctly. There are a bunch of instructional videos online.

It's bostadsrättsförening. Good to know! I'll ask them. Thanks a lot.
