Hi!

I'm jumping in here with a question. I made a thread yesterday, but since it seems like everyone who has worked with transitioning with a steel beam in wood construction is gathered in this thread, I'll try here too.

The beam to be installed is an IPE200 that has been outside, 3.6m long. Should I sand and finish it before it goes into the wall, or is that overkill? How have you done it?

Grateful for your answers!

You don't need to do that. But I probably would have done it myself, mostly to avoid being bothered by not doing it:p

Haha, I recognize myself there, now it is sanded and lacquered.

I'll ask one more question. What screws have you used for attaching to the posts?

I will have three 45x70s as posts, with a screwed cap on top. The beam will then be screwed into the cap, and I'm thinking four screws on each side. I will probably also reinforce with an angle bracket between the bottom flange of the beam and the post. There will also be reinforced angle brackets that are screwed into the beam and each joist that the beam supports.

What do you think of this attachment? For screws between the beam and down into the cap on the post, I'm thinking French screws, about 5-6mm thick with a hex head so I can thread them in with a ratchet. What do you think about the attachment and what do you think about using French screws as an attachment between the post and the beam?
