My poor southern gables are not doing well, and I'm most worried about this one. I plan to give the building a new metal roof in the summer and should also fix the gable then.

On the inside, there are studs and load-bearing similar to logs. Some pieces of the logs are a bit soft.

1. I guess that whatever you choose between metal and wood, the old panel should be removed?
2. Working with wood should be easier now when it comes to windows and doors, right?
3. Could a metal wall facing south become a nightmare with cracking sounds?
4. How do you build with metal? Lots of new studs? Do I have to insulate the inside?
- The second floor was used for grain. If it is used for that again, I suspect that hot metal would not be good?

first you should check how the bottom rule looks and also standing.
if it looks like that, there may be more rot.

cheapest metal sheet and most expensive wood in my opinion. then I think wood looks best. so I would choose wood.
1 old panel off
2 well, you need to do the same task.
3 if you construct the wall well you won’t get any (not as you think at least) creaks.
4 how you build with metal sheet depends on what kind of sheet. but most likely you will build as with wood. possibly a difference in nail rule thickness.

I definitely think wood. It's a nice outbuilding and a shame to put metal on it. From the photo, it looks like a lot of the paneling doesn't need to be replaced, so it will be significantly cheaper to repair where it's bad and put up new battens and then apply distemper. The south side is exposed, but by repainting a bit more often so the sun can't affect the paneling as much, the wall can last essentially indefinitely. Also, make sure that moisture isn't absorbed from the ground by keeping vegetation away. At the bottom, you could saw off the boards a bit higher and lay them horizontally instead, which also saves a lot of time and money. If you don't think it's attractive, you can patch in with vertical boards at the bottom.
