I am new to the forum. I have bought a house from the 1910s that has been extended in stages. However, this is a picture from the original part. I have removed a vinyl floor in a bedroom upstairs and found this floor underneath. I intend to install a new pine floor, but to lay it level with the old one, I need to know if I can and should do something about the damaged timber constructions you see in the picture. On the wall, they have covered the corresponding joists that you see.

It looks like there was a wall there previously that someone removed and then filled the hole with filler before laying the plastic mat. It's a bit hard to see what's under all the filler... Is it a plank as well or a stud?

I would try to replace the damaged plank or planks (it looks like only 1-2) and then sand and varnish the floor because I think it's much nicer and more charming with old pine flooring than with new in an old house.

If you are still determined to lay new pine flooring over the old one, the strength should not be affected by this small hole, so you should just be able to fill it with filler to make it even again. If you lay the new floor in the opposite direction, you don't even need to do that.
