Hello, I have a masonry garage with a poured concrete slab as the roof. Inside the garage, there are some strange panels on the ceiling that seem to be made of paper strips and cement. What are these panels called, which were manufactured in the 1970s? What is their function and what can they be replaced with?

I am going to renovate the garage and also extend the house on the garage roof, and I don't think the panels are very nice. Additionally, they are almost impossible to attach things to.
