Holiday homes that are closed for the winter: The builder is hesitant to remove the moisture barrier in the outer walls (this is in the technical description), but can there really be a requirement for a moisture barrier?

I assume you mean the vapor barrier (plastic is usually used on the warm side of the walls)?

Why do you want to remove it?
It is true that many people advocate not having a vapor barrier in houses that are left unheated, but instead a vapor retarder or perhaps nothing at all. But if you now have a house built with it - why do you want to remove it? Have you experienced problems?

There are no "requirements," but there are recommendations.

The PBL states: "6:531 Air tightnessGeneral adviceTo avoid damage due to moisture convection, the building envelope parts should have as good air tightness as possible."

A rule of thumb usually says that you should have a vapor barrier if you have more than 200 mm of insulation.

I would argue that a vapor retarder also works (at least according to many and not least the manufacturers of such systems). My personal opinion is also that I would rather use a vapor retarder if I can't guarantee the house will be 100% airtight - for example, if I’m building an addition or on an old house (which is the case in our house), as it can then allow moisture to escape if it gets into the construction, which is a high risk in many cases.

Thank you for a very good explanation.

It concerns the expansion of a soon-to-be 100-year-old allotment cottage with a good wooden frame that has held up excellently. There is no insulation today. The allotment cottages must not be used during the winter season (however, thieves and vagrants 😉).

Other cottages in the area that have been insulated over the years have sustained damage, and it is precisely this that should be avoided. The daughter is now studying vapor barriers and vapor brakes 😀!
