Hi

We have remodeled the kitchen and among other things removed the upper cabinets where we had tiles underneath before. These tiles were placed directly on particle board and there have been no problems with that. Now that we are redoing the kitchen, we plan to tile the same area again, all the way up to the ceiling. Can you tile directly on particle board as it was before the renovation?

Best regards, Nicke

no not on chipboard, it should be gypsum, all dead materials are ok. it’s probably possible with chipboard if you attach the tiles with a flexible adhesive/mortar and grout but why complicate things?

Particle board can work. But if you want to be sure, put plaster on top or switch to plaster.

Thank you for your answers.

I will take some time to think about it, but I am leaning towards installing 6 mm gypsum, just to be sure.

You shouldn't tile on organic materials, there are several reasons why you don't do that. However, it's another thing that a large part of the emergency solutions and small shortcuts undertaken over the years turn out to hold/stay in place for many years, so it surely works, the old stuff stayed where it was. But I wouldn't renovate a kitchen to a new one that is as good (and expensive) as possible, only to then cut corners with the tiling. It's not a big, difficult job to put some gypsum there before you tile. That's what I would consider :)

I continue with another question on the same thread.
When tiling black mosaic with black grout that meets white tiles, how do you handle grouting when black grout meets a white grout?

Best regards, Nicke
