Tiles without adhesive and grout
Have ideas about replacing a carpet in an open staircase with tiles of the type 60*30, stone-like. The problem is that the tiles can't be too thick, and I either want to lay them loose or glue them. Can't increase the height.
Will they withstand being walked on? Should I give up on the idea right away?

"replace a carpet"
The carpet is gone, what's left is a "compartment" to insert something new.
Can't the problem be the opposite, that the tiles are not properly flat? The stairs are flat.
This is how it looks:

There's nothing wrong with your tile suggestion, but it will raise the floor by 1 cm, which might be too high, leaving only the option of a mat.
I didn't mean the stone-like parquet but rather something like pine or whatever material your staircase is currently made of.

You can always replace the front edge strip with a higher one if you want to lay tiles on the stairs, or another higher material! However, I think your steps might flex too much for tiles!
I have no idea if it will hold, but using a strong adhesive that can also fill a bit might be an idea. I'm thinking of PL400. You might try it on two tiles first and see how it seems to work.
Otherwise, maybe a click-floor laminate with a suitable surface (stone, tile, wood, there are many appearances) could be glued down. They are usually about 6-8 mm thick...
Just some wild ideas...

We have finally decided on a carpet, to be purchased this week.
The thing I was absolutely most doubtful about is the flatness of the tiles, as my experience is that they are not absolutely flat, and as I said, I didn't want to add more height. The staircase is also newly painted, and I can't be bothered to replace the moldings.
Thanks anyway for all the input.

Hello everyone!!
Cold!! is my first thought when I hear tiling!!!
Then it builds almost 1cm without glue, 30*60 tiles tend to be thick and as you say, they tend to be either slightly concave or convex, so without adhesive there's a risk that it might crack
