First, I want to say that I am the first to be very skeptical of the phenomenon of arches. However, since acquiring a compact living apartment, I've been considering and testing different solutions, including a loft bed that did free up a lot of floor space but didn't suit me for other reasons. Back on the ground level, I am reminded of all the space above the bed that goes to waste!
Inspired by the very nice apartment below, I am considering making a similar arch in my alcove. Not that I have nearly as many DVDs, but you can never have too much storage, and I see advantages both in having the shelves "hidden" inside the arch while also enhancing the feeling of a cozy little room.

To my questions:
1. Have I succumbed to temporary insanity, or are there others who think it's a good idea to build such an arch in an alcove in 2009? The plan is to extend about 25-30 cm (just over the depth I will then have on the shelves inside) and to make the arch itself about 25 cm deep.
2. What do you think about making it "angular" instead of arched to avoid a potential pizzeria look?
3. In my small living room, there are two doorways and a large window opening that are all "angular." Would it look strange to mix these with an arch?
4. Is permission required from the association or others to make an arch in a co-op apartment?
5. I'm thinking joists and MDF - right or wrong? (the apartment is plastered brick from the 1950s)
6. Tips on how to secure the seam that forms between the arch and the wall segment I am extending. I imagine the arch won't be 100% rigid and would prefer to avoid any potential filler cracking over time. Is it completely out of the question to let the arch's outer material continue and also cover the existing wall segment? Disadvantages? On the wall segment, there are currently electrical outlets and a recessed light switch, which will need to be "extended."
All thoughts are welcome.
