Hi! Moved into the new house last week and I'm quite new but excited to renovate as much as possible myself. I've started tearing down a wall to create a larger bedroom space. Now I'm wondering if it's okay to continue tearing it down myself or if I should get professional help? What would the cost be to support a load-bearing wall?
The wall in the picture is what's found under a masonite sheet. To the left is a chimney. I'm not 100% sure if I can just tear down the planks or if there's a risk it's a load-bearing wall. The house has a timber beam foundation.
Regards, Dajje
To determine if walls are load-bearing, you need to study construction drawings and understand how the house is built. Since these are plank walls, you must check how the beams above the wall are oriented so that they don't start bending downward when the wall is removed. I recommend hiring a structural engineer to do this. If it's a load-bearing wall, a building notification to the municipality is required, including information on how the wall will be replaced, as well as the dimensions of beams and pillars.

Thank you BirgitS! I think I'll have an engineer come here and educate me a bit after all.
