Hello, I have bought an old house from 1939 with fairly small rooms. I have a vision of knocking down a wall between the kitchen and the adjacent living room. It seems to be a load-bearing wall. Probably brick and plaster. I have a carpenter in the family who can do the job, but I feel like I want someone who can calculate it, the dimension of the beam, how much it should support, etc. Since the house is old, there are no drawings. (I have asked at the city planning office). Where do I turn for such a calculation? Do I need to make a drawing? Do I need a demolition permit?

A demolition permit is needed when you are going to tear down the whole house, not for removing a wall, so you don't need one for that.
Check on your municipality's website; there is surely a lot of information about what they require for "making modifications to load-bearing structures".
