Switch off with masonite light beam in the attic?
Hello.
In the spring, we will be tearing down some walls, and the plan is to place a seven-meter-long HEA 220 in the attic, which will be quite heavy. The alternative, glulam, would be about 63 cm high and almost as heavy.
It just occurred to me that perhaps we could replace the steel beam/glulam with a high lightweight beam with 15 mm masonite (MP-beam, see at the back of the PDF) to hang the rafters from. What do you think, is it just a bad idea, or should I discuss it with my engineer? He's nice and helps me for free, but I don't want to bother him unnecessarily with my silly questions. That's why I'm bothering you here on the forum instead.

Is it the weight that's the problem?
A glulam beam of that dimension might weigh around 250kg. I would guess that the steel beam weighs 2-3 times as much.
If you have the space, go with glulam, as it is often preferable in terms of fire safety and significantly nicer to work with when attaching studs, etc.

Sounds like a job for a crane to get it up to the attic in any case. A 7 m beam is not something you drag up the stairs exactly.
We installed an 8 m long and 800 kg heavy HEB using jacks and pallets. I believe there were four of us, and it went fairly smoothly.

The steel beam weighs about 50 kilos/meter, so it will be around 350 kg to haul up. We'll see if we put it in the attic or on the ceiling.
