Surprise horizontal panel

Once upon a time, I nailed up horizontal paneling. Started from the bottom and, so to speak, stacked from the bottom up. Turned the tongue downward and the groove (the trench - the slot) upward.

Everything was fine until a few days after the paneling was varnished. Bang! Woke up to a really loud bang in the middle of the night. Yes, the house shook. Thought someone had driven into the house, but saw nothing until I woke up. A panel board had split lengthwise! Right in the middle of the wall. A crack 2 cm wide! Just had to tear it down.

What had happened was that varnish had run into each groove and, so to speak, glued the panels together. When the humidity changed, each panel shrank a bit and built up a great force, which tore a board apart in the middle.

So that's not how you do it, a know-it-all will probably soon write... Install with the groove upward. But that's what I did on my very first panel-covered wall

If you had instead left the panel untreated, rainwater would have run down into the tongue, the boards would have swollen, and BANG pushed the roof loose

Plague or cholera?

I use Z-panel. No tongue and groove, less risk of BANG, even if you install it incorrectly

How did that happen? Did the nails that the boards were attached with also break off?

I thought it was indoor paneling that was referred to since it was lacquered, and there are different mounting methods like nails, clips, etc. But maybe I misunderstood what was meant.

That's good.... Created some thoughts. It was about interior granpanel. And I didn't check what used dyckert looked like afterwards. Tore everything out, nailed up new panel, this time with the tongue down.
