I have a room with old logs as floor joists to an upper floor. Today there is a 4 m long I-beam under the logs which are 6 meters long, resulting in a poor ceiling height in the living room and dining area, so I am considering removing the I-beam and cutting the logs to place 2 or 3 pieces of 145x45 beams where I will then screw the logs. There are 2 bedrooms on the upper floor. What do you think of this solution?

  • Ceiling of a room with exposed wooden beams and a metal H-beam underneath, affecting room height. Wall shelves, curtains, and part of a window visible.
  • Wooden beams and a steel I-beam on a ceiling, with part of a room below including a TV and storage boxes.
The beam is there for a reason, do not remove it.

It was set up by a company when my partner previously tore down a timber wall that stood there.

Yes, you need something to support the intermediate floor, removing the beam and cutting off the logs will likely result in you losing the upper floor.

I understand that too, but the idea is to cut the logs where the beam is and instead attach them to 2/3 pieces of 145x45 mm studs that would be at the same height as the logs, and of course with pillars on the sides that support the 2/3 new studs.
