Hello,

I'm planning to renovate our old pine staircase. I've bought pre-made stair treads that match the parquet of the floor, which will be placed on top of the existing stair treads. If I add these new treads, they will extend so much that they protrude on the top side of the staircase, see (A). To adjust this, I need to cut off 1.5 cm from the front of each existing tread before placing the new ones. How best to cut this since I can't remove the existing treads and have to cut them in place? I've been advised to use a small circular saw and then a multi-tool at the ends.

The front of the new stair treads is a bit longer than the existing treads. I think I need to build a little board or something behind so that the new treads don’t get damaged if someone hits them with a shoe. Does anyone have a thought on this, see (B).

I would appreciate any advice.

I had cut with a jigsaw and the described multi-tool on the edges.
It's not completely straight but you don't see it when the new steps are mounted.

I guess it will have to be that.
