I am going to insulate a sloped roof and was initially set on using OSB+gypsum but have increasingly started to consider using wood furring strips instead, to save a few bucks and a bit of work.

However, I have a question regarding the tightness considering the insulation. I will insulate about 170 mm, then plastic, a layer of 45s, and additional insulation. The question is, is it enough to use furring strips directly on the insulation and put gypsum on that, or is there a risk of the insulation creeping out? Perhaps I don't even need to put plastic between the layers considering that not much stuff is put on a sloped roof?

Has anyone faced a similar dilemma and managed to solve it? :)

If you want to add an extra 45 mm of insulation, you can stretch a fabric underneath it to prevent the insulation from escaping.

However, I think it's better to skip these 45 mm and instead place them on top together with the other insulation - so you get the same insulating ability. This way, you have plastic that holds back the insulation. On this, you should put a gel panel as it is much stronger than the OSB board. I believe there is a risk that the OSB board will flex more than you want.
 
but I'm avoiding quite a lot of thermal bridging by crossing the insulation? Couldn't it be an idea to insulate 170 first, then skip the plastic there, cross 45s, insulate and then apply plastic and furring strips, that way I get plastic that stops the insulation and also fewer thermal bridges. You're probably not going to put any stuff in the sloping ceiling anyway, so OSB might be overkill there, just like moving the plastic in.
 
How did you do? Facing the same problem... Don't know if I should use OSB or place the 45s at cc30. What's best?
