We have some pillars on the house that are in need of a little care. The concrete has come off in some places and the reinforcement is showing.
How is this best repaired? What type of cement/mortar, how to best prime, etc.? Is it easy to "spread out" so that you can mimic the current pattern in some way - maybe mix whatever you now have with less water?
And is there any specific paint that is suitable thereafter? Regular "masonry paint"?
I would have used cement mortar A or fine concrete. It's important to tap on adjacent edges and listen. You want to repair against solid material and not against void areas. Prime with water overnight using a wet cloth; that should be enough. The texture on the surface can be fixed after about an hour when the repair is applied somewhat generously. Use a piece of wood and rub a little. Just don't paint too early; it's good if the repair is dried out (about 1 month).
Thank you for the detailed response! I'm going to try this with cement mortar A, I think. To clarify: do you mean just tying a wet cloth there overnight on the area?

Yes exactly, it's to prevent the repair from drying out too quickly. The surface should be slightly absorbent, meaning neither dripping wet nor bone dry. You can also place a piece of plastic on it when you're satisfied with the surface. It should cure slowly, brush it with water during the first two days.
