Hi! We have an old intercom in our hallway that we would like to remove (it hasn't been in use for many, many years). It seems to be disconnected, at least nothing happens when you pick up the receiver. Unfortunately, we are not handy types, but we can at most fill and paint on our own. It would still be nice to avoid bringing in tradesmen for such a small task. Could we still manage this ourselves, and if so, how should we go about it? Anything in particular we should consider?

  • Old intercom mounted on a wall next to a door in a hallway. The intercom appears disconnected and unused for several years.

The phone is part of a system owned by either your landlord or your housing cooperative. Report the issue and take the opportunity to ask if/when the system will be scrapped?

Thanks Åsa! It is a cooperative apartment and the association has informed that "you can just remove it" since it is no longer in use.

Then you just unscrew it, cut the cable, tuck it into the wall, and patch over the holes?

Cut the threads and push them into the hole they go into. If the wall is wallpapered (and repainted), you can tape a piece of new wallpaper on top. Tape carefully so it doesn't move sideways. Then cut a square through BOTH layers of wallpaper. Carefully peel off the taped piece first. Then also remove the painted-over old wallpaper, scrape thoroughly. Now you have a section of wall without wallpaper and a new piece of wallpaper that fits that spot. Fill the electrical conduit with a bit of sealant. Glue the new wallpaper. Putty over it if necessary, after the wallpaper paste has dried. Paint. Done (y)
