Planning to build a house on a concrete slab on a plot consisting of sand/coarse sand. According to the municipality's maps, there are areas with local occurrences of high radon soil where the plot is located. It's not certain that we have a high occurrence...

We've checked with the municipality and online and have difficulty finding any relevant information on how to build radon-resistant in the best and most cost-effective way. The municipality only states that if it's a high-risk area, it should be built radon-resistant. How it should be built is our problem.

Radon pipe (seems cheapest, but the functionality feels uncertain)

Radon membrane (seems most effective, but is an expensive solution based on the membrane not being damaged in any way during the house's lifetime. It's cast in and cannot be fixed/repaired after casting)

Radon foundation (based on no cracks ever occurring in the concrete, which seems difficult to guarantee)

These are the three options I've found. But it's hard to know which methods hold up best, are most cost-effective, and if they even work...

Is there anyone who has built using any of these or other methods or has tips on people or links we can check with, I would be grateful :)

I checked with the neighbor who has low values despite not taking any measures against radon. So it might not be a problem, but according to the municipality, all houses should be built with at least radon-protected construction. I find it strange that there isn't more and better consolidated information about the various methods and solutions available...
 
Hi, I'm in the same situation you were in. I've somewhat reluctantly bought a so-called radon barrier (municipality involved). Ridiculously expensive and I really hope it delivers. It also looked rather shabby. Does anyone know if regular diffusion plastic wouldn't have sufficed? It's airtight enough, right? Feels like all this radon stuff is just a scam.
 
I pulled a drainage on the inside of the edge beam. Then pulled it up to a vent hood on the roof. If it turns out I have radon and natural ventilation doesn't help, I'll put a fan there. Sealed penetrations with a tube of sealant.

Would never lay any tight fabric/plastic. Who knows what happens under or over it? There are hardly any tests on how it will be after 20 years.
 
what would be the worst thing that could happen given that it's tight do you mean? After 20 years the municipality is satisfied and then I don't care!
 
Seems like you think the requirement is there for the authorities to feel good?
Whether you believe it or not, the requirement is there so YOU don't live in a radon house and get cancer.

Thinking about laying a completely dense fabric/plastic under the concrete. Doesn't feel very good, I think.
In my case, we have a bit of radon, so I'd rather ventilate it away. I think it feels uncertain with such dense materials. Bad enough to have dense plastic in the walls.

I'm almost inclined to believe that it is unnecessary, yes, unless you live in the worst radon pit. I mean that it would be unnecessary to use a special plastic for about 15k when you can get a recognized airtight and vapor-tight plastic for 600 SEK (300/roll). Some things seem to be invented just to create a market for them. Then I also think that many ideas coming from municipalities, etc., are often unnecessary and exist only to give someone something to do. Not so that I can enjoy extremely tedious and expensive building processes.

I understand your point a little bit about it feeling scary when something is completely sealed. I've also thought a lot about that with the vapor barrier in the wall. But I don't know how one would encounter similar problems on a cast slab with underfloor heating in it, and such a sealed thing underneath?
