Hello,
I am new here and hope to get answers from those who know more than me.
I am about to start the basement project in my 100-year-old split-level house. The previous owners enthusiastically painted plastic paint on the walls (quite some time ago) and I have decided to remove it. I tried using steam and a scraper and realized that it's the plaster that needs to come off, plain and simple. Or depending on how you see it... Anyway. After tackling a first area with a hammer and chisel, it's clear that some sections are very porous and the plaster falls off quite easily in small flakes, while it adheres well to other parts. My questions are then:
For the wall to breathe again, do I need to remove the paint everywhere, or can it be left on certain areas where the plaster is still good, if removed around it? Can the paint in these areas be "perforated" so it doesn't block completely? Or is it better to remove everything once you're in the groove?
The house is a Skåne clay brick house and the plaster is quite "sandy." Once I get in a bit, it becomes firmer again, but how do you bind before plastering, and what type of plaster might have been used previously?
I have gone through several threads but haven't found answers to these questions, so if anyone feels inclined, I'd appreciate it! 😊
