Hello!
Has anyone built a hatch from plexiglass for their food/wine cellar? And how did you go about making it functional to walk on as it is in the kitchen?

Best regards,
Irene

How big should the hatch be? Why not have a hatch with tempered glass? How is it intended to open, by hand or automatically?

Plexiglass easily gets scratched if you walk on it.. there is really thick tempered glass to use, but it's probably super expensive and very heavy

Remember seeing a solution in a renovation thread. Finally found it, see post #36 and onwards. However, not with the plexiglass requested.

thank you

Hi! Sounds like a good idea, should be 140 cm /60 cm.
Opened manually but with the support of gas springs.

The weight is what I feel speaks most against tempered glass... but I'd still choose laminated tempered glass if possible.

However, there is Plexiglass with scratch-resistant coating on one side, much better durability than usual.
If you choose plexi, try to find someone who can machine it for you with all the holes, etc. directly.
Plexi cracks relatively easily during processing, and even very small cracks or unevenness when drilling/sawing can easily become large and ruin the entire sheet when under stress. Oversized holes should be used at attachments, etc., so it can move a little since the plastic is affected by temperature.

It's not that outrageously expensive with laminated tempered glass. I have a pane that is ~120x60 in the patio floor, and it cost about 3600 if I remember correctly. However, that was without processing with holes, etc. It is, of course, heavier, but that is only relevant when you choose the size of the gas struts.

Thank you for the advice and tips. I'll check it out a bit :D
