I have ended up in a boring situation.
I have a glulam beam 90x450 5300mm in the garage, and to save height on the "loft," the beam was set at a 220 height. This turned out to be a problem now when the garage door opener is to be installed.
There is a lack of 40mm in height for the opener to fit. I know that according to the standards, you should only make holes in the middle third, but the alternative is to dismantle the joists and floorboards to raise the beam.

Would it be advisable to make a notch 40x100mm at the bottom? In that case, I plan to reinforce with glued plywood to distribute the forces.

The upper floor has a ceiling height of 1.5-1m so there won’t be any major loads stored there.

In a way, you are answering the question yourself. An opening there will indeed severely damage the beam's load-bearing capacity.
If the beam is calculated precisely for its purpose, you can't just make an opening without further consideration.

It's possible to reinforce it, e.g., by adding more material on the sides, but I don't dare to give any advice on how and how much.

Where on the beam should the opening be made? I believe it is worst in the middle of the span and doesn't cause as much damage near the supports.
 
Thanks, I've been gathering ideas and solutions from the forum for a long time but no posts until now.

The beam is calculated to support a floor in a residential building, so there should be a good margin. I don't want to make any openings, but the alternative of operating without a door opener feels tedious. The cutout will be located 1/3 from the support.

Probably everything is properly over-dimensioned, I've seen significantly larger cutouts in regular beams during the renovation of older houses, and they've managed 100 years of load.

The load in regular residential buildings is often dimensioned to 2kN/sqm = approximately 200kg/sqm.

If the beam is dimensioned for that, but if you intend to have significantly less weight there, there are some margins.

You might be able to download a dimensioning program for glulam from moelven trä.
With this, you can get an idea of what your beam is dimensioned for.
 
How far from the end will the urjackning be?
 
Call the manufacturer of the balk and ask?
