We have opened up a "box" that concealed some pipes on the exterior of the chimney in the kitchen. Now that we've opened it up, it looks like the picture, and we are wondering if the black material between the pipes, in/under the mortar, is asbestos. The house was built in 1939, but we don't know if this was done then or later. What do you think?

  • Opened wall section showing pipes and black material in mortar, possibly asbestos, in a 1939 house kitchen.
  • Exposed pipes and black material between them in a wall, possibly containing asbestos, discovered during kitchen renovation. Housing built in 1939.
  • Exposed kitchen wall showing old pipes and mortar with visible black material potentially asbestos. House built in 1939.
Asbestos is not black. Rather, I think it looks like tar paper.
