Hello!

I need tips on how to best reinforce the floor according to the pictures. The pictures are taken from the garage where there is a guest apartment above.

As you can see, the wooden beams are very old. Some of them do not reach all the way to the wall and rest only on one side (not sure why). We have previously reinforced these temporarily according to the pictures. The pictures are now taken after we have torn down all the plaster and insulation to really see how it looks underneath.

Our thoughts so far:

Alternative 1 - replace the beams with new ones and add more so that it isn't as weak between each beam.

Alternative 2 - Keep the existing beams BUT reinforce each beam with laminated timber beams that extend all the way to the other side (5-meter beams). Attach one beam on the left and one on the right side of the beam. Then, as previously mentioned, also add extra beams where it is too weak.

Initial Questions:
* Type of beam? Steel or wood? Other?
* Dimensions of the beams?

* Tips on techniques/ideas that make this work easier?

How would you do it?

Thanks!

  • Old wooden beams supporting a garage ceiling, with visible cables and exposed insulation, highlighting structural issues and potential reinforcement options.
  • Old wooden beams in a garage ceiling with exposed insulation and a cluttered floor filled with bags and a step ladder.
  • Old, exposed wooden beams in a garage ceiling, some not extending to walls. Insulation and temporary supports visible. Discussion on reinforcing them.
  • Old wooden beams and insulation exposed in a garage ceiling with visible pipes and a mirror beneath. Temporary reinforcements are shown on the beams.
  • Old wooden beams and insulation in a garage ceiling, with exposed wiring and a bolt, showing where reinforcements might be needed.
  • Old wooden ceiling beams in a garage with exposed insulation and a bare light bulb. A sink and countertop are visible in the foreground.
  • View of garage ceiling with exposed, old wooden beams and insulation removed. Below is a metal sink unit and table. Light bulb and broom visible.
  • Old wooden beams in a garage ceiling, partially surrounded by insulation material. A metal support is visible underneath the beams.
What are the dimensions of the old beams and the new ones that are nailed on as supporting extensions into the wall?

What is the span?

How far apart are the beams (c-c)?

How does the floor structure feel when you are up there?
