This is what our bike rack looks like today. We would like to build a roof, but I don't think we're allowed to build a roof attached to the wall. Should we try to attach a tarpaulin? Or is there a better/smarter solution to protect the bikes from rain?

Area: 9 sqm.

  • Ground view of weathered wooden post surrounded by leaves and grass, part of a bike rack needing covering for rain protection.
  • Two bicycles are parked in a small outdoor area with tiled flooring and red wooden railings, surrounded by greenery.
  • Bicycles and a stroller parked on a paved area with brown wooden fencing and surrounding green and yellow shrubs.
  • Bicycle rack next to a red house, surrounded by trees and bushes. The post discusses ideas for a rain cover for the bikes.

Nice bike corner! Put up a "sail" like the ones you can have over a terrace if you're unsure of what to do until you come up with a better solution 😜 What you can build also depends on how much roofing/shed roof you already have on the property (apart from the house itself) and whether you live within a detailed development plan area/cohesive building area or outside of these..do you know?

Sailcloth sounds like a good idea right now. What would you stretch the cloth in? The tree and what else?

You can set up some extra nice posts (well anchored to withstand the wind load from the sail during the winter winds) and attach sturdy hooks to them. House walls can be uncertain in terms of how they withstand the wind force, especially since they need to stay up when it rains and blows 😎 Awnings fixed to house walls should be rolled in during strong winds so that the house wall doesn't come loose 🙈

Four poles and a simple plastic roof. If it ever comes to a question of building permits, it's easy to take down and the investment is not that high.

But then I'm of the opinion that you don't need to ask about everything

Yeah, there's so much you can't do if you ask....

I actually took a picture of a nice bike rack with a green roof the other day. Maybe it could be suitable?

I would go with two posts and a beam on the house, then a plastic roof. If that's a no-no, it's easy to fix.

You can build as many pergolas as you want - and it is quite easy to put a metal roof on them - if it becomes an ajabaja, you can remove the roof and fasten sails/tarps on hooks (not a permanent installation) 😎
