It was indeed a while ago that I started this thread, just wanted to show that I actually finished it too!
Just yesterday I painted the handrail, the day before yesterday the steps were glued in place!

Turned out great
Hesitating about our staircase, which will also get a makeover in due time.
Something similar to what you've done is one of the options.
Curious about what kind of white strip you have at the front edge and use to secure the carpet with?

The trim was there from the start, so the carpet is between the trims, not pressed on in any way. In my case, there was carpet initially, and painting the entire staircase was not an option since the wood under the carpet was too bad, requiring a lot of filler and work, and I would have had to sand down those trims. However, it resulted in a nice effect now with the dark carpet and white trim, looks very good.
Hawkai is right, at the top there is nowhere you can get through, but in the actual staircase, not all the rules are probably followed, but that's rarely the case with staircases, just look at all the stairs with stainless steel cables. It was in my thoughts, but I ignored it.
