Even though I can experiment, I find it fun to see how others would have tackled the problem.

I have two pillars, replaced one of them. Maybe drilled the hole a bit wrong for the rebar going up from the plinth into the pillar. So I'm not sure if I can get the pillar closer.

Getting that pillar in required an excavator which I don't have access to now, so I can't lift off the pillar.

The options I've considered:
* Succeed in pressing with clamps?
* Hit with a sledgehammer?
* Use props and a jack to relieve the overlying beams. (tedious).

But, how would you have done it? :)

A pair of longer bolts or threaded rod can be countersunk into the wood.

Smack a hole plate on both sides, top and bottom, and it should hold until the wood rots.

That might be smart. However, right now I think the angle is so large that it might be foolish to drill straight through both and screw them together. At some point, the angle won't be right for the threaded rod, so to speak.

Or do you not think that's a problem?

You also don't need to drill the hole with the exact diameter; you can make it larger and use two flange nuts, washers, or similar, then there's a bit more leeway.
