As part of the drainage system, I plan to replace the garage door with a door and build a basement staircase. I'm planning to lay a gravel base, then pour a slab on it, then build walls for the staircase, and probably build a basement staircase with pressure-treated wood because it is slightly cheaper, and it can always be replaced with a concrete staircase later. The location is optimal because part of the garage door opening can be used, and it's on the short side of the house where there is no snow slide off the roof. You can also keep the basement window and get some light.

Now comes the hitch. When we excavated for the planned staircase, we found the sewer pipe that is in the way of the concrete slab to be poured. This means the concrete pipe must be encased, and if you want to access the pipe later, you have to break up the slab. The excavator operator and his shovel guy thought we will need to address the pipe quite soon and replace the concrete pipes with the usual gray plastic sewer pipes.

The next solution is to place the staircase on the gable end to avoid the sewer pipe. In that case, I would need to brick up the entire garage door, open the old basement door opening, and build a stronger basement roof that can handle the snow slides. I live in Hälsingland, and there is a lot of snow.

Is there any solution where I can still place the basement staircase at the original location? Is it a lost cause if I encase it, or can we hope to just introduce modern plastic pipes into it later? We have already excavated for this placement, and it will be more convenient for me in many ways. Picture below.

If you've already dug - why not replace the part of the pipe that's under the stairs while you're at it? Many things you do create ripples like this. The best approach is usually to address these ripples right away.

Fulkemisten, what a brilliant solution! Of course, I will do it!
