Is there any good glue that expands a little (buy where?)? I'm going to try to remove some creaking from the wooden staircase. What else can be done?

PU glue (polyurethane) expands quite well.
Becomes rock hard when it's cured.
Available where you buy wood glue.

Otherwise, I don't know, stair creaking is tricky to fix.

Is it a new staircase? No stairs should be glued!!! Often it is possible to retighten a newer staircase and securely fasten the steps into the stringers. A staircase should be tightened very securely, it is indeed a kit, but should not be assembled like a piece of furniture from IKEA but rather like a cylinder head on a car.

How much does PU glue expand compared to foam sealant?

As Havsutsikt says: Do not glue the stairs!
Tighten the screws firmly, and if that doesn't help, remove the screws. Use new, longer screws. Feel free to use Torx, they can handle being tightened. ;)

I haven't planned to glue the stairs. I was thinking of putting some glue under the steps so that the steps are pressed up a bit, maybe that will stop some of the creaking.

It won't work. Skruva is what's needed.

Also, I forgot to mention screwing. It can't get any worse. I've screwed in a few extra screws here and there, and it has gotten a little better but still mostly creaking by the wall where I can only access from underneath and screw the steps.

It gets worse with glue. It might help temporarily, but not in the long run. :(
Try angle screwing the treads from the underside into the stringer. Pre-drill if possible, it makes it easier. :)

Then I'll skip the glue. What size screw is best to use?

Jocke

Torx 5.0x70 or 5.0x90 is what I usually use.
