I am currently building a house (turnkey contract) and was there yesterday to see how the construction is going. They have started putting drywall on the walls inside, and what surprised me was that in 3 of the rooms on the ground floor (building 2-story), they have built a duct, so to say, about 40-50 cm up at the edge between the ceiling and the wall, so to say where ventilation pipes run.
It reminds me a bit of this solution: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1pAtPni9xSI/R4fmAzuHbVI/AAAAAAAAAcw/_gMd-Ht6i-c/s400/IMG_3413.jpg even though what they've done in my house is more square and is intended to be completely smooth in style with the other walls.
Is it standard to do it this way? I had expected square rooms, so to speak, without such extensions that were outside the existing walls and that I can already see will interfere with planned furnishing.

It should be possible to run the ventilation ducts in the between joists since it is a new construction. You should be able to see in the plans how the ducts are intended to run. Building enclosures for ducts doesn't feel quite right in a newly built house. Which house supplier do you have? It can vary between different manufacturers.
Thank you Matti, as you say, one should be able to see it on the drawings, I will ask someone who knows that better than me to see how it looks. I had just taken for granted that they didn't build like that nowadays...
