Hello,

We are getting new, wider garbage bins in the municipality and I need to widen the space for the garbage bins that is built into the wall to the property line (see image).

However, I've encountered a problem. I can't even separate the stones. The stones seem to be glued with some type of brown adhesive/sealant. With one stone, I managed to get a crowbar in far enough to pry it loose, but when I've tried with several other stones, the crowbar simply doesn't go in far enough, and all I manage to do is crumble the edge of the stone. I've also tried hammering chisels in from different angles simultaneously to make the stone release, but it's the chisels that have broken, not the stone.

So now I'm asking those of you who know. What is the best way to dismantle a glued stone wall of this type?

I had planned to reuse the stone when I widen the wall, but if necessary, I can of course destroy the stone and buy new.

  • Green trash bin next to a stone wall structure with layered blocks surrounded by fallen leaves and grass.
  • Stone wall with removed top blocks, revealing a gap. A green bin stands behind the wall surrounded by fallen leaves and greenery.
  • Close-up of a stone wall with weathered blocks, showing brown adhesive between stones, against a backdrop of green bin and autumn foliage.
I've become really interested in a reciprocating saw that can be used for almost anything. Maybe even here? Perhaps a blade that doesn't have such set teeth?

Is it an option to move the short side in a paragraph?

A plastic club model quite large and knock them loose. Then you need to scrape off the glue to be able to reuse them.

It might be possible. Spontaneously, it feels like there's a big risk the blade will get stuck, but I could give it a try. My only obstacle is that I don't have a reciprocating saw. However, I do have a multi-tool I could try with.

No, because the light stones are overlapping, so the short side is glued to the long side.

I only have a rubber mallet which isn't enough for the job, but you're thinking of a sledgehammer with a rubber/plastic head, I assume. That could work. If nothing else, very satisfying to smash something with a sledgehammer. :)

Working on the exact same project myself, and there must be so many people with the same problem now that everyone is sorting at home.
Hoping for some smart tips.

Like a Stanley deadblow or equivalent. [link]
I got really excited about the idea of buying a tool called something with "deathblow" but the one in the link is the same size as my regular rubber mallet, so maybe I should just start by trying with that. I just expected it to be too light, so I haven't even tested it. If it doesn't work, I'll upgrade to something larger.

A chance to buy a new tool 😉 a multi-tool has a blade that's too short, a reciprocating saw fits better. Then you also cut away some of the glue at the same time.

I tried with a reciprocating saw, but the blade didn't fit between the blocks, so it didn't work. Then I tried with a hammer drill, but it wasn't powerful enough to separate the blocks from each other. Finally, I was able to borrow a heavy sledgehammer and a coarse wedge/chisel, and then it was possible to break them apart without major problems. Thanks for all the advice and tips. =)
