I have a carport with an attic that we are converting into a conservatory, and I'm wondering about the beams that cross in the ceiling between the posts that go into the ground. Is it to handle wind loads since the carport only has 2 walls? I would like to remove them if possible, but I don't know what they should be replaced with in that case. Does anyone know their purpose?

  • Wooden crossbeams under a carport roof with hanging string lights; a window and part of another building's roof visible in the background.

Be careful so it doesn't end up like this:
A person with a dog stands in front of a collapsed carport, surrounded by wooden debris and trusses.

It's best to hire a structural engineer to inspect the carport on-site or review the construction drawings!

I would probably say that they were needed before the panels on the outer roof were installed. Now the panels stabilize in that direction.

The garage in the previous post lacks panels on both the walls and the roof. But I guess it was the walls that were the problem there.

That sounds reasonable, had a carpenter here yesterday who said about the same thing. He thought it looked overall very over-dimensioned.
