Cost to coat a brick facade

Hello!

We have a facade of brown rough-hewn brick that we are considering changing. The alternative has been to paint or whitewash it. If you whitewash, do you do it directly on the brick or do you need to use a mesh first, and does anyone know what it costs per m2?
