Can we remove the railing in the stairs?

Hi, we are renovating the hallway. One plan we have is to remove the railing that is like a banister and create a more airy version of the railing. Can we do that or is the railing part of the load-bearing structure for the staircase?

Thank you so much for the response! We will make a different kind of railing to comply with that. We just don't want it to be as "coarse" as it is now.
