I will build a carport for our new caravan and will use the old garage as support. I'm thinking of a lean-to roof sloping back towards the garage to use the gutter jointly. I have a problem with not having enough height on the garage and wonder if anyone knows if I could possibly attach to the garage rafters from underneath the eaves and what would be needed for it to hold properly. The required measurements are 2800 clearance height so the caravan fits, as well as 4000 width, length will be 7000.
It is probably not a good solution for several reasons. It is better to place the carport on pillars so that its roof is higher up and never touches the garage's. You can then use the garage wall to anchor the carport's pillars laterally.
Hi Justus, Thanks for the response but if I have to avoid posts, is there nothing that can be done in the garage to make it work? What reasons are you thinking of? I am quite inexperienced in construction hence my question again.
It is difficult to make the garage roof waterproof if you need to puncture its current sealing layer. It is also not certain that the garage wall can withstand the additional load that would be involved. You should be able to make room for two posts for the carport that stands right next to the garage wall, right?
Hello again,
I'm not planning to go through the roof but check my little drawing, not sure if this is possible or completely wrong.
I need to get over the garage to fit in the caravan as I planned.
Unfortunately, I don't think it will hold. With snow, there will be a significant load that the garage's trusses are not designed for. I'll try to make a sketch a little later.
Hello again,
Thank you for the drawing, it looks good.
I preferably didn't want the innermost poles since the ground is already prepared. But I guess I'll have to do as you describe; clearly, there might be problems with my intended solution.
Taking a chance at bringing this old thread to life.... I have exactly the same problem. What I'm a bit worried about is that the water runoff from the carport's metal roof gains enough speed to get under the tiles on the garage roof. But maybe that's nothing to worry about?
How did your carport turn out then @Magnus33? Any pictures you want to share?
