Hello, I'm in the process of tearing down an interior wall and have reached the point where I almost only have one stud left in the ceiling after the wall. I'm not sure if it can be removed and wanted to ask what you think. The house is from '58 and there is an uninsulated attic above with sawdust as insulation above the stud. When I apply physical force to the stud, sawdust rains down, which makes me think there might be sawdust directly against it without any board or anything in between. What do you think? Above is the attic floor so I can't shovel away and check. If it can't be removed, how would you go about minimizing its visibility in the ceiling? I am attaching some pictures.
Broke up a board in the attic floor, and as feared, there's nothing between the beam and the sawdust. Planning to break up another and remove the sawdust, then slide in a sheathing board with building plastic. More tips on how to make it look neat are welcome. Another question: do you think 17mm sheathing is sufficient as a floor under kitchen frames, or should I use 22? The reason I ask is because the measurements are perfect with 17, but it requires some tricks to fit 22.
