Hi,

I have a house from 75 with a slab on grade. The green plastic mat in the picture is on the concrete slab in some rooms. Could it contain asbestos? The brown underlayer feels soft and has slightly coarser fibers in a grid pattern. Hand peeling back green plastic flooring exposing brown fibrous underlayer on concrete slab in 1975 house; question about asbestos presence.

Regards,
Johan

Dangerous asbestos fibers are not visible. You cannot determine from a picture whether something contains asbestos or not, whether it's the carpet itself or any potential adhesive; if you want to be sure, you need to send in a sample for analysis.

Linoleum carpets typically have a jute fabric backing.

That's what's called a plastic felt mat made of jute or fiberglass, no asbestos. I have laid such mats before.

Hello! Resuming this thread... seems like I have the same vinyl flooring in the kitchen. Is there anything for/against it being asbestos?

  • Close-up of a torn gray plastic kitchen mat with beige fiber backing, raising a question about potential asbestos content.
  • Old patterned linoleum floor in kitchen, showing signs of wear and possible concern about asbestos content.

The later in the 70s the carpet is from, the lower the risk for asbestos.
