Which building supply store should one visit if they want to look, touch, and feel a wide range of different floors, panels, stones, and other surface materials for a house? That is, not focusing on machines and gadgets.

The idea is to easily get an overview of what's available on the market (brands and types of materials) and be able to compare the feel between, for example, different wooden floors or types of interior panels.

Knowledgeable salespeople are a plus but not required.

I like Bauhaus, mostly because we don't have anything like that nearby, in fact, we neither have K-Rauta nor Hornbach nearby either but...

I would probably say Bauhaus too, however, it is often hopeless to find staff unless you go there around 9 AM on a weekday outside of vacation times. Then the chances might be better.

Anything special at Bauhaus in Stockholm and the surrounding area that can be particularly recommended, or is the range (available to see in-store) completely standardized?

I visit Bauhaus very rarely, but I think I've noticed that Sickla (formerly Fredells) has a slightly nicer display with floors and such than what is "Bauhaus standard". However, I'll leave it unsaid whether it's exactly the same range as in other stores or not.

Great, a visit to Bauhaus in Sickla it is.

Is Bauhaus also good if you want to scout windows from the major manufacturers?

Best answer

Bauhaus Sickla (significantly better than Bauhaus Länna and the others), Hornbach Norsborg or Byggole Nacka depending on what you're looking for. Unfortunately, none of them have everything from all suppliers. Unfortunately, it's a bit about picking out what's good at each place.

With a tear in the eye, it sounds like what you would have benefited most from is what Fredells once offered. Even though in my opinion this Bauhaus is now the best (or least worst), the loss is enormous. At Fredells, the assortment was good, the staff was present and knowledgeable, and with a suitable discount card/membership card (e.g., villaägarna), the prices were not much higher than, for example, Bauhaus.

When I check the Bauhaus website, they seem to have very few window manufacturers, basically only Velux and Safco. :(

Today I was at Bauhaus Sickla around lunchtime. A lot of staff who seemed friendly and helpful based on the conversations I happened to overhear. However, it's not a particularly enjoyable store if what you want to do is walk around and just look. Sure, there's a large selection, but it feels like the tag-your-own department at IKEA - a bit chaotic and not very inspiring. And if you're interested in somewhat better windows, you'll need to look elsewhere.

So after lunch, we moved on to Bygg-Ole in Nacka. What a difference! Like entering a luxury boutique in comparison. Reduced noise level and a more refined selection. Especially windows were excellently represented with Elit, Traryd/SP, and Bygg-Ole's own Estonian brand in a stylish display where it was easy to maneuver and compare. A very knowledgeable salesperson answered probably a hundred detailed questions in just over half an hour, pointing out the pros and cons of the different brands' constructions. Felt objective and "non-salesy"; more like a private lesson with a window aficionado.

Additionally, a very clear and good presentation of panels from Norrlands trä and Baseco, as well as various solid wood floors and treatments, which was exactly what we were looking for. Even the bathroom display we passed through was really nice and well done, with a completely different attention to detail than at Bauhaus. We didn't have time to form an opinion about the rest of the store, but generally, one could say that if you're going to go somewhere and are mainly interested in learning and getting inspired, then Bygg-Ole in Nacka is a real hit.

Well, enjoyable is probably not an epithet that Bauhaus can receive - I agree with that.
