Hello and Happy holidays!

We have just moved to an apartment and are being disturbed by a sever noise coming from the kids running and jumping all the time downstairs. We are surprised as we did n't expect noise travelling from downstairs.

Does anybody have some idea about where the noise is traveling from to our apartment? Is it from walls or floors? I personally think it shouldn't be the floor as we hear their voice only when they are screaming, but the jumping noise I guess is coming to our place without any attenuation. I should also mention that the apartment was built in 1954.

Any effective solution for this problem or should we move to another apartment?

Best regards,
Reza

Hi Reza,

The noise probably travels through both your floor and your walls, but for the running and jumping sounds, more likely the walls as the vibrations will travel from their floor, into the walls and then into your place. It’s an unfortunate inevitability of living in apartments, and moving to get away from them might only be a temporary solution until your new neighbours get kids of their own.

Of course you can’t blame the kids or even their parents - kids will be kids after all - but one thing which would very likely help would be if they put some rugs down on their floors. Some soft wall coverings in your apartment might make a very small difference too, but it’s going to be only a marginal improvement. You could think about investing in some noise cancelling headphones, for when you really need some quiet relaxation time, but apart from that the only real fix is to move to a house. Good luck and I hope you find some peace and quiet.
