Hello,
I am in the process of tearing down tiles and flooring in an old bathroom. The house is a 50s villa where the bathroom is located on the basement level, partly underground. I noticed earlier that there was a strange smell in the basement when we moved in about 2 weeks ago and I have managed to locate the smell to the bathroom by closing doors and sniffing around. Unfortunately, my sense of smell seems to have gotten used to the smell now, but a couple of friends pointed out that it smelled like mold.
There is träullit against the two exterior walls of the bathroom, behind a layer of plaster, but it still looks completely dry.
Could it be that the träullit has started to mold in some places? I have read that träullit is otherwise a good material that resists moisture because of its pH value and can also breathe... but in bathrooms, can it really handle the moisture load?
Right now, I am not really sure if I should tear down the träullit or leave it as it is, as I am not entirely certain if it is the cause of the smell.
At the same time, I've become a bit fixated on this thread, which to me gives mixed messages:
