We have moved the old kitchen, and a roughly 30 cm wide masonry piece emerged next to the stove. The house was built in 1912, and we wonder if it might be a safety measure next to the wood stove in the kitchen? What do you think? We want to remove this and don't think it should cause any issues... or? It couldn't possibly be supporting the chimney, could it? We are not using the chimney at the moment, so it doesn't matter if a little debris falls. What do you think? Is it safe to remove?
Yes, we have a basement. Directly behind the extension in the picture, there's the chimney which is quite substantial all the way down. On the other side of the wall, there's a tiled stove and in the basement, you can see there's a brick support for it. I don't think there is support under the extension in the picture. Possibly, it is resting on the wall in the basement. I'll try to measure...
There may be a ventilation duct from the lower level if you have one?
I have seen this in a couple of houses, where they heat the air to create good draft. However, there is usually an extra "sotlucka" then.
But most likely, it's only an accumulator to retain some of the heat after the fire has gone out.
