The house was built in 1974 and I believe they laid the carpets then too.L Llvin said:
The yellowish material looks like corkoplast, which was very common around 1974, and is probably some kind of plastic mat. I'm not sure what you mean by another mat. What is to the right of the yellow one in the first picture looks like a piece of wood with glue residue and paint on it, and the pattern looks like an imprint of the plastic mat's bottom (but since I haven't seen it, I don't know for sure). It seems really strange to have two mats on top of each other in a newly built house.
Thank you for your response!
Then maybe they first laid yellow korkoplast when they built the staircase, and later the plastic mat was added, and the nålfiltsmatta we removed even later. I assumed that the nålfiltsmatta had been there since '74 because it was so worn, but it could certainly have become worn even if they laid it in the '90s.

I've been quite worried that there might have been asbestos in the glue for the needle-felt carpet, and I only realized this after we removed it. But if it's the third carpet they've installed and the house was built in 1974, the risk should be small, right? Considering asbestos was banned in 1978. Does anyone know more about it?
I believe that a needle felt carpet placed on stairs wears out quickly because people step on the same spot all the time, and with more pressure than when walking on a flat surface.
Then I understand a bit better what we're seeing in the pictures, and since the upper plastic mat has white paint on it, it seems like the needle felt carpet was installed at the same time as the area around the stairs was painted white. Having a lot of white became popular about 15 years ago.
