Hi! I'm going to fix up a room in a school basement. One of the walls looks like this:

My idea is to cover this wall with, for example, OSB board and then wallpaper over it with some nice wallpaper. Is this a good idea? What is the material the wall is currently made of?

It's quite a large wall, so the cost is important for what I choose to cover it with.

All the best, Tilde

It is not possible to wallpaper on OSB. The boards that are there today appear to be träullit.

Great input! Do you have any idea of what would have been a better alternative?

So I guess that träullit is there because of the acoustics?

Träulliten can be insulation if it's a basement, you'll need to plaster the wall if you want a smoother surface..

Träulliten kan vara isolering om det är en källare, ni får putsa väggen om ni vill ha en slätare yta..
Thank you for the response! I understand. It should be insulation since it’s the outer wall that has träilluit. Do you have any other idea that doesn't require plastering the wall?

Can you install, for example, plywood boards that you paint instead?

In such cases, some cement-based board as it is in a basement, gypsum and wooden boards are not recommended as they absorb moisture and mold.. But putting up boards is not entirely simple on träullit..

But since you have pipes on the walls, a thinner plaster is the only sensible option..

If it is a school, there may be fire regulations that prevent OSB or plywood from being surface materials. Plaster, gypsum, fiber cement boards should work well. Gypsum and other boards require framing first.

If you're satisfied with a somewhat smooth surface that is painted, plaster is an excellent option. There won't be any organic material in the wall that can mold over time.
Then choose the right type of paint that is suitable for basements. A diffusion-open paint that lets through any moisture is usually best over time.

Osb/plywood is mainly good if you need to easily screw heavier items into the walls. But there will be quite a bit of hassle to place the boards behind radiators and pipes.
Applying some plaster should be easier.

Mount våtrumsgips with e.g., Ardex S 48.
