Hello,
my storage door is located opposite the front door of the house. The front door is left-hinged, and so is the storage door.
I plan to replace the storage door and increase its size. Since it currently opens inward, the new larger door will take up more space in the storage room if it also opens inward.

Are there any rules regarding which way storage doors should open? Can I go with a right-hinged one instead??

Regards

To my knowledge, it's only bathrooms where doors are explicitly supposed to open outward, but the front door usually does the same, and in my place, both the storage room and the garage do that too. You can have it however best fits the space. It could be problematic if the door leaves might collide with each other if there's not much space between the entrance and the storage room?

It might be unwise if the door leaves could collide with each other if there's very limited space between the entrance and the storage room.
That won't happen. Even though I have 10x21 on both the front door and the storage room door, they won't collide when open. I've measured.

There we go.

You can safely buy right or left, open outward or inward. An outward-opening theoretically seals better against rain because of the threshold. In public environments and apartment buildings, there are requirements due to evacuation, but not in your storage room if you do not expect queues in the event of an evacuation of the storage room. 😉 (an approximate writing that applies to apartment buildings...)

Since both the storage door and the front door to the house are in an airlock, the doors are protected against rain and wind.
Thanks for the answer, I feel safe no matter what direction the door will be.

In public buildings, exterior doors should open outward.

That was not the case in Grue Church in Norway in 1822. More than 110 people died in the fire. Everyone crowded and wanted to get out. The doors could not be opened due to people pushing against them.
