I'm considering renovating the stairs. Previously there was a recessed plastic mat on the step, now I want to install oak plywood instead, about 3-4mm thick. But I haven't found a good place to get it. I asked at Beijer Bygg, and they wanted over 2000 SEK for a sheet 2400x1200, which felt a bit expensive, or?

Does anyone have any good suggestions?

Maybe it's time to lay oak parquet instead?

Thanks for the response, I've been considering oak parquet but since I already have glued oak stair noses, I would need something thinner that can be "sunk" into the step.

I did such a staircase renovation a number of years ago and ordered a thick oak veneer via Beijers (I believe they in turn ordered the veneer from a company in Gothenburg that dealt with precious wood).

The veneer I found was about 3 mm thick, had a width of 200 - 250 mm, and lengths up to 2 meters.

In my case, I replaced linoleum that was recessed in the steps. I cut out the linoleum with a snap-off blade knife and used it as a template.

The veneer was somewhat thicker than the linoleum, so I had to sand/scrape it down to the same level as the step edge.

It was quite a puzzle as my staircase is U-shaped. I managed one step per day and glued (wood glue) them as I went along. I had access to a small band saw, which turned out to be perfect for sawing the veneer, and I used a razor plane for the final fine-tuning of the veneer to make it fit perfectly (without gaps).

The entire project was stained and lacquered with ordinary water-based floor varnish.

It's about 10 years since I did this, and the veneer stays perfect with no wear in the varnish visible.

I believe the entire job (around 4-5 sqm of veneer) cost about 2,000 SEK at the time.

Fredricsons. This is where most lumber dealers buy their specialty wood. I've been to their warehouse to pick up orders, and it's a powerful experience to see all the material that doesn't seem to be available anywhere else.

I have a thing on the back of the boat made of oak plywood, I need to make a new one now and I'm thinking a bit about materials. It's at the back and is the mount for the canopy.
Wooden board used as a canopy attachment on a boat, made of oak plywood, lying on pavement with visible screws.

Why should you use plywood? Doesn't solid oak work just as well?

Should and should, the old one was made of oak plywood and mostly thought about going with the same.
