I sometimes find myself in situations where you need to insert a small piece of wood somewhere to screw or nail something or replace a piece in a window frame, for example.

These small pieces crack easily, and it's not always possible to pre-drill and countersink because you don't know where the screw will end up when you fasten something on top.

There's talk about dense wood, resinous wood, trees that have grown on a rock slab, etc. But my lumberyard doesn't sell that kind of wood.

Can other types of wood, plywood, or plastic be used for those small pieces (outdoor and indoor) that don't crack as easily?

I'm considering buying some to have at home.

The larger the piece you patch in, the less risk there is of it cracking.
Plywood rarely cracks.

Plyfa and spån I would say are better than regular wood in this regard!

In the building trade, they sell small packs of plastic pieces in different dimensions (and colors) for the purpose.
