Hi! There was hideous tile above the old stove that I've now chipped off. Now I want to apply some kind of mortar and plaster to make it harmonize with the surface above.

What do I need?

I want to be able to use the stove...

Old kitchen with exposed bricks above a stove, where tiles have been removed. Sink and countertop on the left, with tools present.

Render or the modern invention gypsum mortar.

When it comes to render, you have at least two options: the most common render C, which is cement and lime-based, or the more traditional lime mortar (not common today). It's safest to render with a weaker mortar than what was used for the masonry and the previous rendering. Lime mortar becomes the choice since it is the weakest. If it's built with cement mortar (it could be - your kitchen seems to be from the 40s-50s), then render C works. Regardless of the mortar you buy - choose a fine-grained one.

Gypsum mortar is a more modern invention for Sweden. I haven't worked with it myself, but it is supposed to be very easy to work with compared to real renders.

Is it approved by the chimney sweep to use gypsum mortar for a chimney?

While at it, also change the lamp as it is probably not grounded. The cord looks too thin. To make it fit the outlet, which is probably grounded, they have only used a grounded plug. Since it's located above the faucet, there is a risk of water splashing. If a small child does it, there is a risk it could end badly since they are standing against the countertop at the same time.

The image would fit in TS where it is asked why we do electrical installations ourselves.

My neighbor's chimney passed the fire safety inspection without any issues with gypsum plaster on it. But it's not the most heat-resistant material.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Yes, the lamp is an inheritance from the previous owners and will be replaced. At the same time, it is an older model where all parts are glass/ceramic. Is it a direct death trap? In that case, it will come down immediately. The socket is grounded.
