Hi!

I have some uncertainties before we lay new parquet flooring.
We removed the old parquet and under the moisture barrier, we saw small patches of moisture, streaks a few decimeters long. We took off the moisture barrier and a rather strong smell of aquarium appeared. It has just rained a lot for a whole week, so I'm not surprised that there's moisture in the slab right now.

But should we do something about the smell? You don't want to risk it lingering and starting to seep up from the floor.

It's a single-story house with underfloor heating from -58 in the floor 🤠

Grateful for tips and advice!

  • Old concrete floor with removed parquet; blue vapor barrier sheets lie on the floor.
  • Old concrete floor with visible moisture marks and discoloration after removing parquet and moisture barrier. Possible dampness and odor issues due to recent rainfall.
If you haven't smelled it since 1958, it's probably quite safe to apply a new moisture barrier and proceed. From the name "moisture barrier," you might suspect that it works just as it should if you haven't noticed anything before.
