Currently renovating the outbuilding with a guest room. Planning to redo the roof and currently have unspliced boards as the underlayer. Is it possible to lay roofing felt on these boards, or will it crack due to the slight flex in the boards since they are not spliced? Are there better alternatives? masonite? Feels unnecessary to remove the unspliced wood.
If you can access it, perhaps you can screw narrow boards, like battens, to the underside of the boards between the rafters? That should make it a bit more stable. But in that case, make sure the screw doesn't stick up on the top side... 
If one is a bit careful with how they walk while laying the pappen, I don't see that it would be a problem once the battens and metal/tiles are on the roof.
Sure, it would be possible to tie it together from underneath with a batten/board between each roof truss (in the direction of the truss), but I don't think it would matter.

I have successfully connected steps in this way with a board in the middle of each step (in the walking direction). It actually becomes noticeably more stable. What you are doing from a construction perspective is distributing the weight from individual boards to several. But TS might have already solved this since the question is a few days old!ArneTW said:

Thank you for the answers. I haven't decided how to proceed yet, but I'm leaning towards laying felt directly on the roof and being a bit careful. After all, they are 1-inch boards and about 110 between the joists, so it doesn't flex that much.
if you are going to have sheet metal on it. maybe treat the roof as one without boards at all?
