Hello!

Started tearing down the recreation room in a 50s house today and found the following behind the framed wall against the gable.
What is this material? Looks like fiberglass.

I can add that when the drainage was done two years ago, a large hole was discovered on the outside which was bricked up. Previously, central heating pipes went into this location (shared boiler for the entire area) Exposed section of a wall showing yellow fibrous material resembling fiberglass insulation behind plaster in a basement during renovation. A deteriorating wall with exposed fiberglass insulation behind a removed panel in a 1950s house basement. Behind a dismantled wall in a 50s house, showing insulation material resembling fiberglass, next to a concrete section with visible wear. A close-up of fibrous material, possibly fiberglass, exposed behind a wall in a 1950s house basement. .

Yes, it seems to be fiberglass.

Yes, it probably is fiberglass, the question is what it's doing in the basement :wow:.

Is there also a gap in the wall there?

It is fiberglass-reinforced polyester somewhat carelessly laminated there.

Is there a hatch in that wall too?
Yes, there is a hatch with some pipe stubs going straight through. As I mentioned above, I believe the pipes for the central heating used to come in that way, but I'm not sure. It's a bit strange that they covered almost the entire thing. I'll probably need to get a mason over to see if the hatch can be removed and the hole bricked up.
